Dhirubhai Ambani offered to help me when I went bankrupt, recalls Amitabh Bachchan
In the late 1990s when Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan went bankrupt, it was Dhirubhai Ambani who had offered to help him. Speaking at the Reliance Industries' annual event on Saturday, Bachchan recalled that Dhirubhai had sent Anil Ambani to help him financially emerge out of the crisis, which he had politely refused.
It was the late 90's when ABCL, the pet venture of the senior Bachchan had landed him into financial trouble. Lenders were knocking his doors, losses were mounting and his bank balance dropped to zero.
The money which Dhirubhai was offering me could have help me come out of the crisis in a jiffy. However, I politely refused his offer and slowly by God's grace started to get work again which helped clear my debts," Bachchan said.
"Later, when I met him again at an event at his house, he called me and declared in front of his industrialist friends that 'this boy had fallen down but got up on his own. I respect him for that'. These words of his were much more valuable to me than any amount of wealth that he would have given," Bachchan added.
Addressing the gathering of nearly 80,000 plus people including a majority of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) employees at the 40th anniversary of the group, Bachchan said that the legacy left by Dhirubhai has touched millions of lives for the better.
Along with Bachchan, other celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Sonu Nigam were present at the occasion.
While Bachchan spoke about the virtues and values of hard word and knowledge that Dhirubhai left behind, Shah Rukh Khan made an attempt to lighten the mood by playing games with the audience.
As the brand ambassador for Reliance Jio, Shah Rukh Khan also got senior Jio executives including Anish Shah to talk about the milestones that they have reached in terms of connectivity.
Jadhav, Thakur return for SA ODIs; Umesh, Rahul miss out
Kedar Jadhav, who suffered a hamstring injury that kept him out of the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka, returns to the India squad for the six-match ODI series against South Africa beginning in February 2018. As many as ten frontline batsmen, including Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni, are part of a batting heavy 17-member India squad announced by the MSK Prasad-led selection panel on Saturday (December 23).
Shardul Thakur, the Mumbai pacer, also finds a place in the squad after missing the limited-overs leg of the Sri Lanka series due to a shoulder injury. Regular skipper Virat Kohli returns to the team after taking a break from the Sri Lanka ODIs and T20Is. The Indian selectors left Umesh Yadav out while including Mohammed Shami in the squad. Shami last played an ODI against Australia in September 2017.
"Shardul will be playing shortly. In fact he will be playing from January 1. Kedar will be alright by the start of the series. He will be playing the T20 domestic games shortly," Prasad, the chief selector, said of the two players returning from their injuries. "Announcing the team one month before will also help them prepare well. ODI specialists will have enough time to prepare and it's likely they will go in a bit early."
KL Rahul, despite his good form against Sri Lanka in the T20I series, continues to remain on the sidelines for the ODI format while Suresh Raina, who recently passed the Yo-Yo test, hasn't yet found favour with the selectors.
India squad: Virat Kohli (c) Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur
"It's a six match series so we thought it will be good to pick a 17-member squad," Prasad said about the squad size. "In ICC tournaments as well, as many as five substitutes are allowed. That's why we decided to go with this squad. The ICC is going to allow 16-member squads from now on. At the same time we are playing six matches there."
Shreyas Iyer, who recently scored two successive half-centuries against Sri Lanka in his maiden ODI series, retains his place, as do Manish Pandey and Dinesh Karthik, who could double up as a back-up wicketkeeper for MS Dhoni. Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli make up the top three, with Ajinkya Rahane as the possible back-up opener.
Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel are the two all-rounders in the lineup which also has two wrist-spinners in Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal along with four pacemen - Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shami and Shardul.
India's frontline spinners in the Test format - Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja - have been ignored again with the squad featuring as many as eight members from the 17-man squad for the three Test series preceding the six ODIs.
The ODI series gets underway on February 1 in Durban, four days after the conclusion of the third Test. The second ODI will be played in Centurion on February 4, the third in Cape Town on February 7, while the fourth and fifth ODIs will be held on February 10 and 13 in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth respectively. The final ODI will be played in Centurion on February 16, followed by a three-match T20I series which concludes on February 24.

BJP our brothers: 6 things Rahul Gandhi said about Narendra Modi's party after becoming Congress president
"I'm an idealist," Rahul Gandhi declared as began his first speech as
the Congress' 49th president, a title that offically became his when he was handed an election certificate at a ceremony in New Delhi today. The Congress boss wasted no time in tearing into his party's longtime arch-rival, the BJP, and its current leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But he also said the BJP were the Congress' brothers and sisters.
the Congress' 49th president, a title that offically became his when he was handed an election certificate at a ceremony in New Delhi today. The Congress boss wasted no time in tearing into his party's longtime arch-rival, the BJP, and its current leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But he also said the BJP were the Congress' brothers and sisters.
Curious to know more? Here are six things Rahul Gandhi said about Narendra Modi and the BJP after becoming Congress president.
DISAGREEING BROTHERS: Rahul Gandhi said the Congress considered the BJP's members as its brothers and sisters, but that it didn't agree with them. While the BJP crushes voices, the Congress allows them to speak, he explained.
WHO CAN STOP THE BJP?: Only the Congress' pyaara karyakarta and neta ("loving party cadre and leader"), according to Rahul.
CONGRESS NO LONGER JUST GRAND AND OLD: But also young. At 47, Rahul Gandhi is one INC's youngest presidents . He said today that a "grand, young and old" party would fight the politics of anger.
ONE MAN'S VOICE: Rahul said Indians were being compelled to believe that one man - an obvious reference to Narendra Modi - was the voice of reason. Expertise, experience and knowledge can be cast aside for personal glory, he continued.
MEDIEVAL RAJNEETI: He said that while the Indian National Congress had brought the nation to the 21st century, Narendra Modi was taking it back to medieval times.
UNKIND POLITICS: Politics isn't being used to uplift people, but to crush them, Rahul Gandhi explained. It's devoid of kindness and truth, he said.

Hindi-Chini Buy Buy
Can we even dream of saying bye-bye to China’s economy?
Sushma Swaraj said it simply in parliament in early August when she ruled out war with China over the Doklam plateau: “China has contributed to our growing economic strength. For them, there’s a lot at stake…here. They have been awarded many contracts.”
That’s putting it mildly. Chinese companies have a dominant position in electricity generation and supply in 18 Indian cities. Whether it is Oppo handphones or Paytm e-wallets (Alibaba) or e-tailer Flipkart (Tencent), or Chinese investments in ‘Make in India’ manufacturers (foreign direct investment totalling $1.54 billion 2014 to 2016), or the $1.3 billion takeover bid for Gland Pharma by Shanghai Fosun, Chinese businesses are greedily eyeing India’s huge market, nearly as big as their own. And they are only just starting to rev up.
The Narendra Modi government, worried about malware and cyber-attacks that could cripple power and communications (remember the telecoms equipment maker Huawei and the data-protection hackles it raised both in the United States and India?), is moving to ring-fence Chinese companies, asking probing questions about security and requiring local units to hire Indians in senior management roles. That hasn’t prevented Huawei from expanding here — it plans to double market share soon. Overall, Chinese makers accounted for 51.4 per cent of India’s smartphone market in the first quarter of 2017 — a 142 per cent year-on-year growth.
It is not going to be easy to disentangle the two economies. Here are some figures to illustrate how dependent we have become on Chinese goods: India’s imports from China totalled $1.5 billion in 2000-01, or just half of imports from the United States. By 2016-17 imports from China had ballooned to $61.29 billion, while imports from the US had grown far more slowly to $22.34 billion. India’s exports to China, on the other hand, have struggled up to $10.2 billion in 2016-17 from $831 million in 2000-01. In contrast, India’s exports to the US have jumped to $42.3 billion in 2016-17 from $9.3 billion in 2000-01.
Put differently, India ran a trade deficit with China of over $51 billion in 2016- 17 (nearly half of our global trade deficit of $108 billion), and a trade surplus of about $20 billion with the United States.
We import every conceivable item from China. The list is long and numbing. Department of Commerce data show that the biggest items we bought from China in 2016-17 were organic chemicals ($5.6 billion), fertilisers ($1.25 billion), plastic items ($1.85 billion), and iron and steel, raw material as well as finished products ($2.58 billion). Then there are the really big-ticket items: nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery, etc. (which rose to $11.12 billion in 2016-17 from $10.55 billion in 2015-16) and electrical machinery and electronic goods ($21.98 billion).
Small Indian manufacturers I spoke with complained that Chinese products were sub-standard and came with built-in rapid obsolescence. But they were at least a quarter of Indian prices. “Even when a buyer wants to buy Indian, he uses Chinese prices to negotiate us down to a level where our profit margins are paper-thin,” one manufacturer grumbled. Fortunately, Indians give the Chinese a run for their money on precision-engineering products, automobile parts like gears, and ball-bearings. China is good at mass manufacturing, but Japan still holds sway in measuring instruments and micro-electronics. But are we ever going to graduate from Hindi-Chini buy buy?

Global Warming
Global warming is the term used to describe a gradual increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and its oceans, a change that is believed to be permanently changing the Earth’s climate. There is great debate among many people, and sometimes in the news, on whether global warming is real (some call it a hoax). But climate scientists looking at the data and facts agree the planet is warming. While many view the effects of global warming to be more substantial and more rapidly occurring than others do, the scientific consensus on climatic changes related to global warming is that the average temperature of the Earth has risen between 0.4 and 0.8 °C over the past 100 years. The increased volumes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released by the burning of fossil fuels, land clearing, agriculture, and other human activities, are believed to be the primary sources of the global warming that has occurred over the past 50 years. Scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate carrying out global warming research have recently predicted that average global temperatures could increase between 1.4 and 5.8 °C by the year 2100. Changes resulting from global warming may include rising sea levels due to the melting of the polar ice caps, as well as an increase in occurrence and severity of storms and other severe weather events.
Rohit's 3rd Triple Double Century
“MS Dhoni just came up to me and said that I want you to open the innings as I am confident that you will do well. Since you can play both cut and pull shot well, you have the qualities to succeed as an opener,” Rohit Sharma told PTI earlier this year.
File image of Rohit Sharma. AP
Dhoni was at the other end when Rohit scored his first double century in ODIs against Australia at Bengaluru in 2013 and the former was India’s captain in that match.
Fast forward to 2017 and Rohit has now hit his first double century in ODIs as a captain and Dhoni played as a wicket-keeper batsman in the match. How times have changed and also how Rohit has changed!
Some players have certain qualities that make them unique, and for Rohit, it is those extra one-and-half seconds to time the ball that makes him so special.
He has the talent but there is a thin line between being talented and being successful. Rohit Sharma version 1.0 was talented but not successful but the version 2.0 has both along with the consistency.
To get a perspective of Rohit's rise, his ODI career should be divided into two phases. The first phase, in which, he played 86 matches, he scored 1978 runs at an average of 30.43 and opened only thrice. From the time he made his debut till 2012, Rohit's average of 30.43 was the lowest among all the Indian players who scored 1000-plus runs in ODIs.
Rohit's career was not on right track until MS Dhoni came with a masterstroke to make the Mumbai batsman open the innings. It was in the home series against England that Rohit opened in two ODIs and scored 87 runs, and then he became India’s regular opener from the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.
He has amassed 4439 runs at an average of 58.40 in ODIs since 2013 which is the second most by any player. Only Hashim Amla has hit more centuries than him since he has become India’s regular opener in ODI cricket.
Rohit hit only two centuries in his first 86 ODIs while in his next 87 ODIs, he has hit 14 tons which means a century after every six ODIs, and he is now an indispensable member of Indian cricket team.
Let's take a look at Rohit's numbers in ODI cricket:
His numbers will definitely improve in future but as of now he has got a hobby of making 200s for fun. Who knows, maybe he can score a triple ton in ODIs, too.
And now, let’s look at all the records created and broken by Rohit during his third double ton in ODIs at Mohali in the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka:
Only AB de Villiers and Shahid Afridi have now hit more ODI sixes than Rohit in a calendar year. De Villiers hit 58 sixes in 2015 while Shahid Afridi hit 48 sixes in 2002.
Rohit is the only player to score more than one double century in ODIs.
Rohit is now at the second place in the list of player hitting most sixes in ODIs.
Rohit has hit 14 centuries as an opener in ODIs which is the joint third most among all Indian openers. Sachin Tendulkar had hit 45 centuries as an opener in ODIs which is a record.
Rohit became the second captain to score a double century in ODI cricket after Virender Sehwag who achieved the same feat against West Indies at Indore in 2011.
Rohit's 12 sixes at Mohali against Sri Lanka in the second ODI are now the second most by a captain in an ODI match.
Rohit is one of the three players to hit 10-plus sixes in an ODI match on two separate occasions. The other players who have achieved the same milestone are AB de Villiers and Martin Guptill.
Rohit became the second Indian player to hit 50-plus sixes in international cricket in a calendar year after Sachin Tendulkar who hit 51 sixes in 1998 across formats.
Rohit is known for hitting sixes at his will as he is now at the fourth place in the list of Indian players hitting most sixes in ODIs.
No player has scored more 150-plus scores in ODIs than Rohit Sharma. Sachin Tendulkar and David Warner have also hit same no. of 150-plus scores as Rohit.
Rohit has hit six centuries in ODIs in 2017 which is the joint most by any player along with Virat Kohli in this year in ODI cricket.

Am I mad at you? That’s your main concern after shattering my whole world? Mad for what? Breaking my heart? Or for all the lies? Maybe for letting me put all my trust in you only to be betrayed? How about the fact you didn’t even have the decency to tell me to my face? Or the way you think it’s crazy that I’m crying over it cause to you breaking up is no big deal. Am I mad at you?… no. More like crushed… did I ever really know you?#NASA SCIENTIST Intelligence
NASA scientists are planning to use artificial intelligence to better manage the increasing communications between its spacecraft and the Earth. NASA spacecraft typically rely on human-controlled radio systems to communicate with Earth. Cognitive radio, the infusion of artificial intelligence into space communications networks, could meet demand and increase efficiency, researchers said.
"Modern space communications systems use complex software to support science and exploration missions," said Janette C Briones, from the NASA's Glenn Research Center in the US. "By applying artificial intelligence and machine learning, satellites control these systems seamlessly, making real-time decisions without awaiting instruction," said Briones.
Specific portions of the electromagnetic spectrum used for communications to various users. However, such channels are limited in number and can cause a bottleneck in the era of increasing communications.
Software-defined radios like cognitive radio use artificial intelligence to employ underutilised portions of the electromagnetic spectrum without human intervention.
These "white spaces" are currently unused, but already licensed, segments of the spectrum. A cognitive radio can use the frequency while unused by its primary user until the user becomes active again.
Cognitive radio switches from one white space to another, using electromagnetic spectrums as they become available.
"The recent development of cognitive technologies is a new thrust in the architecture of communications systems," said Briones.
"We envision these technologies will make our communications networks more efficient and resilient for missions exploring the depths of space," she said.
"By integrating artificial intelligence and cognitive radios into our networks, we will increase the efficiency, autonomy and reliability of space communications systems," she said.
For NASA, the space environment presents unique challenges that cognitive radio could mitigate. Space weather, electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun and other celestial bodies, fills space with noise that can interrupt certain frequencies.
"Glenn Research Center is experimenting in creating cognitive radio applications capable of identifying and adapting to space weather," said Rigoberto Roche, from NASA.
"They would transmit outside the range of the interference or cancel distortions within the range using machine learning," said Roche.
In the future, a NASA cognitive radio could even learn to shut itself down temporarily to mitigate radiation damage during severe space weather events. Adaptive radio software could circumvent the harmful effects of space weather, increasing science and exploration data returns.

Happy Birthday YUVI
Dearest Yuvi paaji,
Sat Shri Akaal. One more year has gone by and by the time you read this, it would be your 34th birthday. Happy happy happy birthday to you my hero. May the almighty bless you by fulfilling all your desires and all the happiness in the world come only to you.
Like the previous year, my memories have again gone back to the YUVRAJ SINGH in the past 1 year, which has been a roller-coaster ride of emotions both for you and us (your fans)
Firstly, I heartily congratulate you for finding your soul mate and getting engaged to her. I wish Hazel bhabi ji and you to be the happiest couple ever. It was a severe heartbreak to all your fan girls but I think they too are wishing you both a happy life ahead.
Like the last year (or even in a better way) you re-created the records in the IPL auction. How does it feel to break your own record ? Well, it must be the best feeling on the earth. Congratulations for again being coroneted as the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER with a whopping amount of 16 crore rupees.
Playing a role of an angel is not new to you. You’ve done it a lot of times while rescuing Team India from critical situations in the matches. But, being an angel off the field must be special to you. Congratulations for turning into an Angel Investor through the YouWecan ventures. I wish you to be the catalyst for a lot of thoughts which strengthen the nation in multiple ways.
Looking at your professional career, it has been a fine journey than the previous years.
The 2014/15 Ranji season has been the best ever in your entire career with you scoring 671 runs from 7 matches at an average of 55.91
You also scored your career best score in a Ranji Trophy match (182 vs Saurashtra) However, you improved it by scoring 187 this season
From December 7, 2014 to November 25, 2015 you scored 1008 runs in the Ranji trophy from 21 innings averaging 48 runs per match.
You also played a crucial role in taking the Punjab team to the finals of the Vijay Hazare trophy in 2014/15.
You also scored IPL fifties against the Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians - a milestone which you were yet to achieve against both these teams.
There weren't big scores from you in the IPL but, one must admit that 5 of your innings in this edition have ended because of some spectacular catches.
You’ve also completed 8,000 first class runs, 23,000 senior level cricket runs and 3,500 runs for the Punjab team in the Ranji Trophy and 11,500 runs in the List-A cricket.
Apart from these numbers, you have also attained better fitness levels with your consistent sweating out in the gym. Everybody is glad to see you much fitter than in the past.
This year has been too heavy on the emotional front too. After 1999, this has been your first birthday without playing an international match for India. I can imagine how hard this is for you. You’ve also missed the ODI cricket world cup 2015 – whose previous edition India won because of your heroics. But, one must admit that there are a lot of situations where the team and the fans missed you terribly.
The sudden goodbyes of your closest friends Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag to the international cricket must also have made you emotional.
These are those testing times where one does not get the proper results despite working very hard. I don’t know what exactly the almighty tests us for but we must keep on trying. In your words, NEVER GIVE UP !!! I’ve seen this same kind of testing time in the life of my favorite actor Salman Khan (from 2002 to 2009) During that phase, despite working very hard, things weren’t clicking big to him. He still kept working very hard like you’re doing now. Once that tough phase ended, he has re-defined himself to the world. From this experience, I can say that you’ve a lot left to achieve as a cricketer on the other side of this testing time.
