Dhirubhai Ambani offered to help me when I went bankrupt, recalls Amitabh Bachchan

In the late 1990s when Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan went bankrupt, it was Dhirubhai Ambani who had offered to help him. Speaking at the Reliance Industries' annual event on Saturday, Bachchan recalled that Dhirubhai had sent Anil Ambani to help him financially emerge out of the crisis, which he had politely refused.

It was the late 90's when ABCL, the pet venture of the senior Bachchan had landed him into financial trouble. Lenders were knocking his doors, losses were mounting and his bank balance dropped to zero.

The money which Dhirubhai was offering me could have help me come out of the crisis in a jiffy. However, I politely refused his offer and slowly by God's grace started to get work again which helped clear my debts," Bachchan said.

"Later, when I met him again at an event at his house, he called me and declared in front of his industrialist friends that 'this boy had fallen down but got up on his own. I respect him for that'. These words of his were much more valuable to me than any amount of wealth that he would have given," Bachchan added.

Addressing the gathering of nearly 80,000 plus people including a majority of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) employees at the 40th anniversary of the group, Bachchan said that the legacy left by Dhirubhai has touched millions of lives for the better.

Along with Bachchan, other celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Sonu Nigam were present at the occasion.

While Bachchan spoke about the virtues and values of hard word and knowledge that Dhirubhai left behind, Shah Rukh Khan made an attempt to lighten the mood by playing games with the audience.

As the brand ambassador for Reliance Jio, Shah Rukh Khan also got senior Jio executives including Anish Shah to talk about the milestones that they have reached in terms of connectivity.

Jadhav, Thakur return for SA ODIs; Umesh, Rahul miss out

Kedar Jadhav, who suffered a hamstring injury that kept him out of the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka, returns to the India squad for the six-match ODI series against South Africa beginning in February 2018. As many as ten frontline batsmen, including Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni, are part of a batting heavy 17-member India squad announced by the MSK Prasad-led selection panel on Saturday (December 23).

Shardul Thakur, the Mumbai pacer, also finds a place in the squad after missing the limited-overs leg of the Sri Lanka series due to a shoulder injury. Regular skipper Virat Kohli returns to the team after taking a break from the Sri Lanka ODIs and T20Is. The Indian selectors left Umesh Yadav out while including Mohammed Shami in the squad. Shami last played an ODI against Australia in September 2017.

"Shardul will be playing shortly. In fact he will be playing from January 1. Kedar will be alright by the start of the series. He will be playing the T20 domestic games shortly," Prasad, the chief selector, said of the two players returning from their injuries. "Announcing the team one month before will also help them prepare well. ODI specialists will have enough time to prepare and it's likely they will go in a bit early."

KL Rahul, despite his good form against Sri Lanka in the T20I series, continues to remain on the sidelines for the ODI format while Suresh Raina, who recently passed the Yo-Yo test, hasn't yet found favour with the selectors.

"It's a six match series so we thought it will be good to pick a 17-member squad," Prasad said about the squad size. "In ICC tournaments as well, as many as five substitutes are allowed. That's why we decided to go with this squad. The ICC is going to allow 16-member squads from now on. At the same time we are playing six matches there."

Shreyas Iyer, who recently scored two successive half-centuries against Sri Lanka in his maiden ODI series, retains his place, as do Manish Pandey and Dinesh Karthik, who could double up as a back-up wicketkeeper for MS Dhoni. Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli make up the top three, with Ajinkya Rahane as the possible back-up opener.

Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel are the two all-rounders in the lineup which also has two wrist-spinners in Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal along with four pacemen - Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shami and Shardul.

India's frontline spinners in the Test format - Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja - have been ignored again with the squad featuring as many as eight members from the 17-man squad for the three Test series preceding the six ODIs.

The ODI series gets underway on February 1 in Durban, four days after the conclusion of the third Test. The second ODI will be played in Centurion on February 4, the third in Cape Town on February 7, while the fourth and fifth ODIs will be held on February 10 and 13 in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth respectively. The final ODI will be played in Centurion on February 16, followed by a three-match T20I series which concludes on February 24.
